CVN-79

Artist's impression of one possible design.

CVN-79 is the hull designation for a proposed United States Navy Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carrier. Construction of this ship (if authorized) would not begin before 2010. In theory, CVN-79 would start to replace the Navy's Nimitz-class aircraft carriers. CVN-79 is programmed to begin construction in 2012 and to be placed in commission in 2018.

On 7 December 2007, the 66th anniversary of the Attack on Pearl Harbor, Congressman Harry Mitchell proposed naming this ship USS Arizona.

All American supercarriers since the now-decommissioned USS America have been named after people.

On 15 January 2009, Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding was awarded a $374 million USD contract for design work and construction preparation for CVN-79.
