The SM-6 ERAM (Extended Range Active Missile) is an under development upgraded version of the SM-2 designed to hit both aircraft and high performance cruise missiles. The missile combines the proven SM-2 airframe with a seeker from an AIM-120 AMRAAM missile. By utilizing the seeker from the AIM-120 AMRAAM missile, the SM-6 can offer the capability to hit targets outside the ships radar horizon, and therefore offer increased range as well as accuracy. The missile also takes advantage of both the SM-2 and AIM-120 AMRAAM's datalinking capability, and because it requires very little development is expected to be inexpensive to procure.

Standard Missile-6 Completes Key Design Review Early

08/05/2005 10:43:08 AM

By Marc Selinger

The U.S. Navy's Standard Missile-6 (SM-6) program has completed a key design review three months ahead of schedule and with a positive outcome, according to a service official.

"We were pretty pleased with the overall results of the design review," said Capt. Mick Outten, who manages surface-ship weapons programs for Naval Sea Systems Command. "We don't see any major issues."

The preliminary design review (PDR) for SM-6, also known as the Extended Range Active Missile (ERAM), was moved up from September to the last week in June, as many activities leading up to the review took less time than projected.

"We've gotten through some of the wickets sooner than we expected," Outten told The DAILY in an Aug. 3 interview.

For instance, the program thought it would take 12 to 14 months to build and test the seeker's antenna, but that task ended up taking less than eight months because of knowledge the Navy gained from looking at other programs.

The biggest recommendation resulting from the PDR was that the missile's complex software undergo robust tests.

The early PDR could pave the way to hold the critical design review earlier in 2006 than expected.

Homeland defense?

Designed as an extended-range, ship-launched missile to destroy aircraft and cruise missiles, SM-6 will combine the propulsion and ordnance sections of Raytheon's existing Standard Missile-2 Block IV with a modified version of the seeker used on Raytheon's existing Advanced Medium Range Air to Air Missile (AMRAAM). Raytheon was awarded a $440 million contract in September 2004 for ERAM's system development and demonstration phase (DAILY, Sept. 7).

The Navy and the U.S. Missile Defense Agency are looking at whether SM-6 could also be used to destroy short-range ballistic missiles in their terminal phase of flight. In addition, there have been talks about the utility of a land-based version of ERAM for homeland defense.

SM-6 is projected to have a range of more than 200 miles, compared with the 75-plus-mile reach of the Navy's main air defense weapon, the SM-2 Block IIIB.

ERAM will combine a semi-active seeker with AMRAAM's active seeker. While a semi-active missile uses the launcher's radar signals to home in on a target, an active-seeker missile has its own radar for that purpose.

"With semi-active missiles, you are relatively confined to the line of sight from the launch platform to the target," Outten said. "But once we can go to a full active missile, then that gives you the opportunity to reach out and touch things where we haven't been able to do it before from a surface ship."

Despite the advantages of an active seeker, SM-6 also will have a semi-active capability to provide "a little more homing time" in some situations against fast, high-altitude targets at long ranges, he said.

Advanced software will closely monitor the missile's condition aboard a ship, meaning that the weapon will have to be sent to a recertification facility only every 10 to 15 years compared with every four or five years for older Standard Missiles.

SM-6 is slated to begin flight-tests in late 2007, enter low-rate production in mid-2009 and achieve an initial fielding in fiscal 2010. The missile's cost goal is $2.2 million a copy, but the actual price tag could end up below $2 million, Outten said.

ERAM will be deployed on Aegis cruisers and destroyers and on the future DD(X) destroyer and CG(X) cruiser. The Navy has not yet determined how many ERAMs it will buy, partly because it is still assessing how many ships it will have, Outten said.
