이란, 신형 국산잠수함 배치로 해군력 증강

[테헤란=신화사/뉴시스]이란은 국내에서 자체 건조된 신형 잠수함을 배치해 해군력을 증강시키고 있다고 현지 위성방송 프레스 TV가 6일 보도했다. TV에 따르면 이란 해군사령관 하비볼라 사야리 소장은 이날 새로운 중형 카엠급 잠수함이 어뢰와 해상 기뢰 등을 탑재하고 있어 방어와 공격 작전을 동시에 수행할 수 있다고 강조했다.

사야리 사령관은 카엠 잠수함의 실전 배치로 이란이 역내에서 유일하게 고성능 잠수함 기술을 보유한 국가가 됐다고 밝혔다. 그는 이로써 이란이 자체 군사력으로 영해를 지킬 수 있는 충분한 태세를 갖추게 됐다고 말했다. 앞서 모스타파 모하마드 나자르 국방장관은 신형 잠수함을 진수했다고 공식 천명했다.

최근 미국과 유럽국가의 군함들이 걸프 해역에 전례 없이 증강되는 가운데 사야리 사령관의 발언이 나와 주목되고 있다.

Iran Hypes New Submarine

"Iran has launched a submarine production line to ensure its forces are equipped to maintain security in the vital oil shipping route, the Strait of Hormuz waterway," Reuters reported. 

Should we worry? "Effectively shutting Hormuz would ... have a very real impact on world energy markets," according to Stratfor. And small, quiet submarines are perhaps the best weapon for doing so.

But Iran is known to exaggerate or lie outright about new weapons. Just a couple weeks back, Tehran claimed to have modified its old U.S.- and Russian-built fighters with enough range to reach Israel -- a claim many experts doubt.

These new "semi-heavy" submarines reportedly are "capable of firing missiles and torpedoes," but that's all Iran is saying about them. It's worth noting that Iran already has a credible submarine force in the form of three Russian Kilo-class diesel boats. In addition, there are up to 11 mini-subs (pictured) meant for laying mines and carrying commandos. "These submarines are for the most part considered troublesome to operate," Galrahn wrote about the latter.

Perhaps the biggest danger is from the Russian-made mines the submarines might deposit. "While some of this sounds like a James Bond movie rejected idea," Galrahn cautioned, "the truth is the threats are real and if executed, will cause damage in a war." Especially considering how little attention the U.S. Navy pays to mine warfare.
