최근 이란의 핵 개발 의혹과 관련해 무력재제 여부를 둘러싸고 국제사회의 긴장이 고조되고 있는 가운데, 이란은 20일(현지시간) "자체 개발한 차세대 초음속 전투기 두 대가 시험비행 단계를 거쳐 전투 준비태세를 완료했다"고 발표했다.

무스타파 무하마드 나이잘 이란 국방부장관은 국영방송 연설에서 "군 당국과 민간 항공 전문가들의 합동연구를 통해 신형 전투기 ‘사에케(Sa'eqeh)’를 개발했다고 밝혔다.

“오늘의 자랑스러운 이 자리를 빌어 우리의 손으로 완성한 차세대 전투기를 공개하는 바입니다”

나이잘 장관은 신형 전투기 ‘사에케’를 22일부터 일선부대에 실전 배치할 것이라고 말했다.

작년 9월 이란은 ‘사에케’ 전투기의 처녀비행에 성공하면서, 이미 보유하고 있던 항공기의 개량 형이라고 주장했다. 시험비행 모습을 담은 공개 영상으로 볼 때 ‘사에케’ 전투기는 1979년 혁명 전 미국에서 도입한 F-5 전투기를 바탕으로 만들어진 것으로 추정된다.

이란 국영방송은 ‘사에케’ 전투기가 8월부터 생산되고 있는 ‘아자라흐시’(이란어로 ‘번개’를 뜻함, 역시 미국제 F-5를 복제한 기종) 전투기의 개량 형이라고 전했다. 이미 이란은 전차를 비롯해 장갑차, 미사일과 어뢰 등을 국산화하여 자체생산하고 있다.

이란은 ‘사에케’ 전투기의 성능이 미국의 F-18 전투기와 비슷하나 무장 능력 면에서 앞서기 때문에 ‘더 강력하다’고 주장했다. 하지만 서방의 전문가들은 이러한 주장을 확인하기는 어렵다며 사실상 미제 F-5의 확대 개량형에 불과하다는 의견이 지배적이다.

전문가들은 또 이란군의 일부 무기 체계가 중국을 비롯해 여러 나라에서 들여온 기술로 현대화됐지만 미국과는 비교가 되지 않는 수준이라고 평가했다. 그렇다고 해도 지난 81년 이란·이라크 전쟁 당시 페르시아 만 해상항로를 봉쇄했던 것처럼 이란은 제한적이나마 전략 목표에 대한 공격을 수행할 수 있는 능력을 갖추고 있는 것으로 알려졌다.

이란 공군 사령관은 지난 19일 이스라엘이 공습을 해 올 경우 즉각 보복 폭격에 나설 것이라고 경고한 바 있다.

프랑스의 니콜라 사르코지 정부는 지난 달 이란 핵 문제의 외교적 해결이 실패할 경우 전쟁도 불사한다고 밝혀 이란을 자극했다. 대 이란 고립 정책을 주도하면서 이란의 핵무기 개발 의혹을 제기해 온 미국의 부시 행정부는 이란 핵 사태의 외교적인 해결을 원하지만 결렬될 경우 군사적 행동을 배제하지 않을 것임을 확실히 밝혔다. 이란 정부는 핵개발은 에너지 자원 생산의 일환일 뿐이라고 주장하고 있다.

Iran said on Thursday (September 20) it had "scared its enemies" by test flying two new-generation, domestically-produced jet fighter planes and had shown its battle readiness, the latest riposte to speculation about a war over Tehran's nuclear plans.

French officials, including President Nicolas Sarkozy, have spurred talk about a possible war by saying the failure of diplomacy to resolve Iran's dispute with the West over its atomic programme could result in conflict.

The United States, which has been leading efforts to isolate Iran because it believes Tehran is trying to build atomic bombs, has said it wants diplomacy to end the standoff but has refused to rule out military options if that route fails. Tehran says its nuclear plans are geared to energy production.

Defence Minister Mostafa Mohammad Najjar told state TV that experts in the ministry and air force had jointly carried out research, design and production of the Saegheh warplane.

"Today we are proud to announce that we have achieved the cutting edge of designing new generation fighter jets," Najjar told state television, adding that the two jets would officially join the country's fleet of warplanes on Saturday (September 22).

Iran said in September last year it had for the first time flown one of the Saegheh planes, describing it then as a modification of a warplane already in its fleet.

It did not say at the time on what plane the Saegheh was based, but images shown of its test flight suggested it might be based around a U.S.-built F-5, a plane bought from the United States when Iran was a U.S. ally before the 1979 revolution.

State television said the Saegheh jet was a new generation of the Azarakhsh (Lightning) fighter, which Iran said in August was now being built on an industrial scale. Tehran says it makes tanks, armoured personnel carriers and missiles and torpedoes.

Tehran says the Saegheh has similar capabilities to the U.S. F-18 fighter but is "more powerful". Although Iran regularly says it has made major advances in its weaponry, Western experts say it rarely gives enough detail to confirm the capabilities.

The experts say Iranian weaponry, some of it modifications of equipment bought from China and others, would be no match for U.S. technology but say Iran could still deliver a punch by hitting strategic targets, such as blocking the Gulf waterway.

An Iranian air force commander said on Wednesday (September 19) Iran had plans for bombing Israel if the Jewish state attacked first.
