미사일 요격 레이저 무기 국내 개발

남한으로 날아오는 북한의 탄도미사일이나 다연장로켓을 레이저 광선을 쏘아 파괴할 수 있는 레이저 무기가 국내 기술로 개발됐다.

군 소식통은 9일 “최근 국내 기술진에 의해 개발된 레이저 무기로 목표물을 요격하는 실험에 성공했다”며 “현재는 레이저 광선 출력이 약해 수백m 떨어져 있는 목표물을 파괴할 수 있는 수준이지만 앞으로 수㎞ 떨어진 목표물까지 파괴할 수 있을 정도로 개선할 것”이라고 말했다. 레이저는 현재 의료나 산업용으로 쓰이고 있으며, 군사용으로는 미국과 이스라엘이 합작해 만든 것이 있다.

국산 레이저 무기는 국방과학연구소(ADD)와 두산인프라코어 등 국내 업체들이 1990년대 말부터 개발해온 것으로 알려졌다. 레이저 무기는 스커드·노동 등 탄도미사일은 물론 우리 수도권에 가장 큰 위협이 되고 있는 북한 240㎜ 다연장로켓 등을 요격하는 데 효과적이며, 트럭에 싣고 다닐 수도 있다. 국방부는 2010년대 중반쯤에 레이저 무기를 실전 배치하는 방안을 검토 중이다.

또 우리 군은 지상은 물론 함정·잠수함에서 발사가 가능한 사거리 1500㎞ ‘현무-3C(일명 독수리-3)’ 순항 미사일 개발을 추진 중인 것으로 알려졌다. 현무-3C 미사일은 관성항법장치(INS)와 위성항법장치(GPS) 등을 달아 미국의 순항 미사일인 ‘토마호크’만큼 정밀하게 목표물을 맞힐 수 있는 것으로 알려졌다.

국방부는 9일 이 같은 내용을 포함한 ‘국방과학기술 진흥 정책서’(이하 과학기술정책서)를 발간했다. 과학기술정책서는 우리나라 국방과학기술 수준이 세계 10위권이라고 밝혔다.

SKorea seen developing laser weapons

SEOUL (AFP) - South Korea is developing a mobile truck-mounted laser weapon capable of destroying North Korean missiles and artillery shells, a report said Saturday.

A defence ministry research team and defence firms have been involved in the development of high energy laser weapons, the Chosun Ilbo newspaper said.

From 2010, South Korea hopes to deploy the weapon, which can counter North Korean missiles and long-range artillery shells deployed along the border, it said.

South Korea faces a potential military threat from nuclear-armed North Korea, which has improved its missile system to cover all east Asia.

In July last year the North test-fired seven missiles, including the Taepodong-2, which in theory could reach the US west coast. This year the North has tested a series of short-range missiles.

The North's missile launches have heightened tensions in the region in the past decade. In 1998 North Korea sparked alarm in Japan by test-firing a long-range missile over that country.
