The BAE Systems Mantis Unmanned Autonomous System Advanced Concept Technology Demonstrator is a British demonstrator programme for Unmanned Combat Air Vehicle (UCAV) technology. The Mantis is a twin-engined turboprop-powered UCAV with a wingspan of approximately 22 m, broadly comparable to the MQ-9 Reaper. Other partners involved in Phase 1 of the Mantis programme include the UK Ministry of Defence, Rolls-Royce, QinetiQ, GE Aviation, L3 Wescam, Meggitt and Lola.

Development of the Mantis started in late 2007, a mock-up being revealed at the 2008 Farnborough International Air Show. The Phase 1 Mantis vehicle is powered by two Rolls-Royce Model 250 turboprop engines, although this is likely to change in later variants, and is intended to have at least 24-hour endurance. Phase 1 is intended to demonstrating BAE Systems' rapid prototyping capabilities and will focus on the evaluation of autonomous control systems. Later phases may evaluate civilian applications, armed variants and sensor packages. The prototype first flew in November 2009 at Woomera test range in South Australia.

The large dome on the front, reminiscent of a pilot's canopy, contains an upward facing satellite communications system.

소리없는 암살자, 英 무인공격기 '맨티스'

아프가니스탄에 투입된 미국의 무인공격기 '프리데터' 와 'MQ-9 리퍼'는 '소리없는 암살자'라는 별명을 얻으며 맹활약하고 있다. 전장에서 수백km 떨어진 게임룸 같은 조종실에서 무인공격기가 보내주는 영상을 보며 공격대상을 물색한다. 표적이 확인되면 버튼을 눌러 로켓포를 발사한다.

무인공격기는 조종사를 안전장치가 필요 없기 때문에 작고, 가볍고, 빠르며 효율적으로 임무를 수행한다. 적외선 영상장치가 있어 낮밤을 가리지 않으며 악천후에도 전장에 투입된다. 최근 탈레반과 알카에다 등 이슬람 무장단체 소탕에 착수한 미군은 아군의 피해를 줄이면서 적군을 대량 살상할 수 있는 무인공격기 덕을 톡톡히 보고 있다.

영국의 세계적인 방산업체인 BAE시스템은 미국의 'MQ-9 리퍼' 급의 무인공격기 '맨티스(Mantis)'를 선보였다. 개발을 시작 한지 19개월만인 지난 10월 21일 BAE는 호주 남부 사막지역인 우메라에서 맨티스의 이착륙 조종 실험에 성공했다고 발표했다.

맨티스는 2008년 영국 판버러 에어쇼에서 모형이 공개되면서 세상에 알려졌다. 날개길이 20m의 맨티스는 롤스로이스의 터보 프로펠러 엔진 2개를 장착하고 최장 24시간 비행할 수 있다. 美레이시온의 GBU-12 레이저유도폭탄과 미사일을 장착하고 있다. 최고 비행고도는 15km다. 이 무인공격기는 비행기 자체가 컴퓨터라 해도 과언이 아닐 정도로 정교한 컴퓨터 비행시스템과 각종 센서를 갖추고 있다. 위성을 통해 무선으로 조종되며 적외선 영상장치와 최첨단 레이더가 지상을 이잡듯 수색한다. 공격기는 물론 수색·정찰기로도 활용할 수 있다. 맨티스 개발은 BAE시스템이 주도했으며 GE 어비에이션, 퀴네티크, 롤스로이스,메기티가 참여했다. 영국 군 당국은 맨티스 개발이 완료되면 아프가니스탄에 실전배치 할 예정이다.
